I’m quite interested in the interaction between controlled, human-made things, and the seemingly relentless unpredictability of nature. As with most things, there seems to be a perfect balance of the two somehow held within the mind yet never grasped.

When I was still a kid my family left the city for the country life and moved to an acreage in the thick, piney woods of East Texas. I spent plenty of free moments roaming in the pine forests, getting my clothes dirty with fertile soil and making my hands sticky with tree sap. I warmed myself in the winter with fires built of hand split oak. I had a habit of taking things apart and not putting them back together. I would macerate citrus, cloves, cinnamon sticks and pine needles in rubbing alcohol in feeble attempts to make my own cologne.

Twenty years later while living in Brooklyn, I rediscovered my love of perfume and spent years of late nights and obsessed weekends studying raw materials and learning how to make fine fragrances. I founded Hendley Perfumes in 2014 as a way to share my unique, unisex, artisan perfumes with a minimal, elegant presentation.

I still like to wander and take photographs, exploring parts of the city I’ve never been to before, looking for new details to reveal themselves. This kind of satisfying push/pull balance of the manufactured and organic works as an approach to making perfumes also—that is the interaction of synthetic and natural materials evolving into something more beautiful & intriguing.
